C and Java Helpdesk

The C and Java Helpdesk service is provided to students who wish to obtain additional help in C or Java programming outside of their scheduled lecture/tutorial/lab times. This 15-minute Helpdesk service operates out of the Duty Programmers’ office at 10.10.13 and is available for bookings (CS login required) throughout the day.

Students may seek help for general problems as well as general questions related to assignment work. This service is designed to operate on a quick drop-in arrangement – the Duty Programmers can act as another set of eyes to help you spot problems.

If you need more help than a 15-minute slot can offer, consider the mentoring service available to students in COSC1073/2362 Programming 1. (More information to be advised.)

Before visiting the Duty Programmers, students should have made a substantial effort and should be able to explain the symptoms of their problem and what they have tried to do.

Duty Programmers:

* CAN help with

  • syntax and logic errors
  • gdb and trace-printing
  • basic non-course-specific concepts (I/O, linked lists, etc)

* CANNOT

  • start, do or explain an assignment
  • check assignments for you

Make a 15-minute booking with a Duty Programmer (CS login required)

You must be able to login to an XTerm and be able to locate and display your files from yallara/numbat or blowfly. The Duty Programmers cannot load files from USB drives.

When signing up, in the "reason" field you should enter (up to 50 characters):

  • The programming language (C or Java)
  • The course code (e.g. COSC1234)
  • A brief description of what you need help with

Example reason: “Java, COSC1234, I need help with linked lists”

Once you make a booking, you will receive an email confirmation.

If you are not at the Duty Programmers’ office on time, they are under no obligation to extend your booking.
