"Masters of LabMed"

Master of Laboratory Medicine

The Master of Laboratory Medicine provides advanced training and education in the major disciplines of Laboratory Medicine. It is offered for graduates from general science / biomedical science degrees that have a biological science focus. These graduates would have had limited or no experience in diagnostic laboratory disciplines.

This coursework program is designed to provide an advanced qualification which will prepare graduates for employment in diagnostic pathology or medical research. A graduate from this program will be able to apply a range of diagnostic procedures in a clinical pathology laboratory. They will have high level skills in analysis and knowledge integration which is relevant to their area of specialisation.

Program Structure

The Master of Laboratory Medicine program will allow students to specialise in one clinical pathology discipline. The disciplines offered in the program are Haematology, Clinical Biochemistry, Histopathology, Clinical Microbiology, and Transfusion & Transplantation Science.

The first semester of the program will allow students to choose three (3) of the disciplines. This will give students a broad introduction to the clinical pathology profession. It will also give the student a good basis on which to choose the areas of the profession for further study. Students can exit the Program at this stage with a Graduate Certificate of Laboratory Medicine.

The second and third semesters will allow students to focus on two (2) disciplines. These will be studied in depth, and will result in the student being professionally capable in 2 areas of the diagnostic industry. It is important that students are multi-skilled at this level.

The fourth semester will focus on one (1) discipline. High level skills will be developed in this area and a Project will also be completed which is associated with the chosen discipline.

The program starts mid-year (early July).
