Password FAQs

How do I develop an easy-to-remember password?

There are a number of simple techniques to help you choose easy-to-remember passwords that are difficult for others to guess or determine.

The “passphrase” is one technique. It is generally longer than a password and includes a variety of characters. For example:

  • GoSaints2012
  • Ihave3dogs!
  • Sally4me
  • IhateMondays!
  • Tobeornot2be (To be or not to be)
  • L84dinner (late for dinner)
  • 2plus2isFour
  • 8SmithStreet

Visit the Password guidelines to read about other techniques to choose an easy-to-remember password.

How often do I need to change my password?

You need to change your password every time you are prompted by the eDirectory (NDS) popup – generally every 180 days. As at 14 May 2012, any password changes must reflect the new Password criteria contained in the Password guidelines. If you want to change your password now, go to the Password assistance web page.

What happens if I don’t change my password when prompted?

You will be unable to log in to the RMIT network and need to contact the IT Service Desk to have your password reset.

What if my password has expired or I can’t remember it?

If your password has expired or you can’t remember it, and you don’t have a challenge question set up, you will need to contact the IT Service Desk for assistance.
