RMIT Central Authentication System (CAS) FAQs

What is the RMIT Central Authentication Service?

The RMIT Central Authentication Service (RMIT CAS) allows authorised students and staff to access multiple web applications after they log in with their RMIT ID and password.

This is also referred to as ‘single sign-on’.

Why are we introducing RMIT CAS?

RMIT CAS enhances password security and reduces time spent re-entering passwords for the same identity.

Which applications are registered to RMIT CAS?

A number of core RMIT applications, including myRMIT, the RMIT website and Enrolment Online, were registered to RMIT CAS between September – December 2011. As additional applications are added to RMIT CAS, communications will be circulated to staff and students.

How do I log in to RMIT CAS?

When you first log in to a web application which uses RMIT CAS, you will be directed to the RMIT CAS website to enter your RMIT ID and password. Once your details have been validated, you will be returned to your web application. If you access other applications that use RMIT CAS, you will be automatically granted access (i.e. ‘single sign-on’).

I logged in successfully to RMIT CAS, why have I been asked to re-enter my details?

When you enter another application, you may be required to re-authenticate to comply with security protocols.

How do I log out of RMIT CAS?

When you finish your session, it is important to close all browser windows to prevent access by unauthorised users.

What software does RMIT CAS use?

To implement this campus-wide authentication management system, we used Central Authentication Service (CAS) software. Jasig CAS was originally developed by Yale University and has been deployed by many universities worldwide.

Why am I getting an ‘authorisation error’?

This is because either:

You don’t have access to this application – if you think you should have access, contact the IT Service Desk.

OR

You have signed in as a student, but are trying to access staff applications, or signed in as a staff member but are trying to access student applications. If you want to access both applications simultaneously, you will need to open a new browser (e.g Firefox or Chrome if you already have IE open) and then log in with the other ID.
