Using the RMIT student Electronic Mail System (EMS)

A comprehensive guide is available when you login to the student EMS.

Select the Sems_help icon from within the S student EMS to open the guide.

Username

The ‘Username’ is your student number with changes incorporated.

To obtain your student EMS username:

  • Insert the letter ‘S’ preceding your student number
  • Remove any alphabetical character from the end of your student number.

Note: Some student number do not have a alphabetical character at the end.

Example:

  • Your student number is 1234567d:
  • Your username would be: S1234567.

Password

If this is the first time you have used the eDirectory (NDS) service your password is your date of birth in reverse. If you were born on the 8 April 1972 then your password is in the form YYYYMMDD e.g. 19720408.

Note: Your password is your eDirectory (NDS) password.

Email address

Your student email address is your username with ‘@student.rmit.edu.au’ added e.g. username S1234567 address is S1234567@student.rmit.edu.au.

Login window

This is the first step in accessing your mailbox.

Sems_login

Enter your username and password then click the ‘Login’ button

To access the system without SSL security please click the ‘Non-Secure Email Access’ link.

Note: For your security, do not tick the ‘Save this password’ box.

POP3 Settings

To access your mailbox via a POP3 client, you will need to configure your preferred email application. The student EMS has been setup to only allow secure (SSL) POP3 connections. This has been enforced to protect your Username and Password.

Note: When using POP3 to access your student EMS mailbox ensure that ‘Leave a copy of messages on Server’ is not enabled as this will fill your mailbox and prevent you from receiving further email.
