Survey (CES)

Designed to systematically gather information from students about their teaching and learning experience in all University courses

The Student Feedback Policy requires that all courses are to be surveyed annually.

Introduced in 2005.

Reports provided to the course teaching staff. Results are aggregated to Field of Education, Portfolio, School and Program level and, made public for the purposes of benchmarking, and sharing good practice. Used to inform local improvement planning and course review.

An end-of-year report is made to the Vice-Chancellors’ Executive.

Results are also distributed to staff with responsibility for improving student satisfaction with teaching and learning through the Heads of Schools.

Ongoing
Postgraduate
Research
Experience
Survey (OPRES)

Administered biennially and designed to evaluate research degree candidate satisfaction

Administered to all enrolled research degree candidates.

Since 2000

Distributed to each Academic Portfolio and School to inform supervision and the management of related matters. Considered by the Research and Graduate Studies Committee who establish an Action Plan.

Student Experience Survey (SES)

Collects information from students about their university wide experience and their program experience. Versions are available for VET, Higher Education and Offshore programs.

School’s determine annually which programs to survey.

Since 1999 RMIT has collected student experience data at the program and university wide level. The University Experience Survey: UES and the Program Experience Survey : PES (for HE) and Student Satisfaction Survey: SSS (for TAFE) were used to capture this information.

This effort was consolidated into one survey, the SES, in 2004.

Program reports are published to the RMIT web accessed by staff login.

Results related to students’ program experience are used to inform program annual reports, and subsequently School plans, budgets and profile decisions. Program level results are also a useful predictive indicator of graduate responses on the Course Experience Questionnaire: CEQ (for HE) or Student Outcome Surveys: SOS (for VET).

Students’ experiences of their general University and campus life inform plans and budgets for support and infrastructure groups such as the Library, Property Services, Student Services, the Student/RMIT Union etc.
