About NEIS

What is NEIS?

NEIS is a Commonwealth Government funded program that assists unemployed people into self-employment. NEIS is administered by the Federal Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR). RMIT has been awarded a contract with DEEWR to deliver NEIS programs in Melbourne (City) and Bundoora.

In conjunction with DEEWR, RMIT undertake to:

  • Select suitable participants for training
  • Conduct training
  • Provide business advice and mentor support while the business is being established

NEIS aims to assist people to create viable small businesses by offering training and mentor support to eligible members of the community. RMIT Business plays a major role in this process by providing practical training and expert business mentors.

NEIS provides selected eligible applicants with a free eight-week Certificate IV in Small Business Management (NEIS) training course followed by 12 months of mentoring and income support. Participants need to be unemployed and on Centrelink Benefits in order to be eligible to apply for this scheme.

For information about NEIS, please ring 9925 2933. There is an information session every Friday at 9:30am at RMIT Building 108, 6th Floor, Rooms 1-8, located at 239 Bourke Street, Melbourne. All aspects of NEIS are discussed at these sessions and application forms are distributed.

Do you have a good business idea?

If you have a viable business idea that you wish to develop into a commercial venture, NEIS may be for you. If you are registered with Centrelink and Receiving benefits, you are eligible.

NOTE: There is no qualifying time period.

Training

NEIS offers 8 weeks training & up to 12 months Income Support and Mentoring.

  • Pricing, Costing & Breakeven
  • Financial Planning
  • Operations Plan
  • Record Keeping

Mentoring

During your 12 months of Income Support, each NEIS business is provided with a business Mentor who has regular contact with you to help ensure your Business will continue in the long-term.
