The Standards of Linguistic Competence in English and LOTE among NAATI Accredited Interpreters and Translators: A Review
By Dr Barry Turner & Dr Uldis Ozolins
Translating & Interpreting program, RMIT University

This report, completed in 2007, was commissioned by NAATI [National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters] as part of a number of projects the authority has undertaken into quality aspects of its accreditation process. The research report was based on a survey of chief stakeholders in the T&I field, including language service providers, professional associations, end users of translators and interpreters, educational institutions and policy makers. It concluded that overall there was little concern in the field about the level of language proficiency of accredited practitioners, either in English or in their Language Other than English, though other issues such as ethics and professional conduct in some instances were more often causes of concern. The report also looked at how issues of language competence were handled in the NAATI testing context, making a number of suggestions how the testing procedure could be made more transparent and feedback to candidates made more informative.
