Professor John Hearne, Head of School, Mathematical and Geospatial Sciences

The School of Mathematical and Geospatial Sciences draws together disciplines involving the collection and analysis of data and the understanding and optimisation of systems through modelling and visualisation. The School aims to generate original knowledge in these fields while addressing local and global problems.

For those wanting careers offering flexibility and a broad scope of application opportunities, the School offers undergraduate degrees in Geospatial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, and Surveying as well as coursework masters programs in Statistics (Business), Operations Research, Information Security, and Geospatial Science.

While our programs are underpinned by a solid theoretical foundation, students also gain experience in all the software and equipment used in business and industry. We have an excellent record in producing 'job ready' graduates that are sought after by the relevant industries.

Our research activities are clustered around three groups: System Modelling and Optimisation, Geospatial Science, and Information Security, all of which have strong partnerships with international collaborators. Our Satellite Positioning for Atmosphere, Climate and Environment (SPACE) Research Centre is conducting cutting-edge research into platform technologies for space, atmosphere and climate applications. We also offer research degrees (PhD and Masters) in areas aligned with these groups.

Members of the School are active in a number of professional societies and have held leadership positions in most of these. The School has about 50 academic staff and over 60 postgraduate research students.
