The vast volume and diversity of work available on the World Wide Web, and the ease with which work can be copied electronically, means that RMIT University and other educational institutions need to refine assessment practice to ensure that assessed work is an accurate reflection of the student output. The Turnitin software is widely acknowledged as the most developed resource for using text-matching to determine plagiarism. It is vital for all of the RMIT community that the academic integrity of any assessed work is assured.
The approach taken by RMIT to the implementation of Turnitin is an educative one. Staff who utilise the Turnitin software can also receive support:
Turnitin was broadly implemented across the University in 2005. The service is currently being expanded to integrate with other systems used by the University for online learning, such as Blackboard and PebblePad.
Staff and students across RMIT are invited to provide feedback on the use of this service, to contribute to the ongoing evaluation of the usefulness of Turnitin in our academic community.
