RMIT’s experiences with work integrated learning (WIL) activities benefit all parties – students, industry and community partners, alumni and teaching staff.
Students apply recently acquired knowledge and learn new professional skills as well as develop generic attributes such as interpersonal skills in work and organisational settings. Industry and community partners have access to the energy, knowledge and skills of students as well as the chance of building networks with potential future employees.
RMIT teachers and academics build ties with practitioners and organisations with opportunities to extend to research and other new relationships.
RMIT’s WIL Policy establishes a focus for future development and improvement of WIL in RMIT programs recognising the strategic advantage to our students, graduates, staff and industry partners. Implementing WIL Policy introduces the policy and processes for implementation.
Developing and delivering WIL experiences for students is exciting and poses new challenges for teaching staff. The Practical guide to teaching section on WIL provides further information, along with examples of practice from the university community.
Through a range of initiatives, RMIT staff are increasing the opportunities for students to undertake WIL particularly overseas placements and projects through electives. For example, RMIT’s exemplar program for offshore placements (RMIT International Industry Experience and Research Program (RIIERP)) is expanding.
A scheme to offer students WIL experiences in Vietnam taking advantage of RMIT’s campuses is commencing in 2009. Another, the RMIT University Social Entrepreneurship Initiative, is a student-led initiative that aims to establish, and support, a cohort of students, who participate in a professional capacity, on multi-disciplinary, community projects at home or abroad.
WILNETFor information about this and other initiatives in WIL visit WILNET: a Blackboard site available to all RMIT staff via the Learning Hub. WILNET includes exemplars, contacts for advice and support, useful resources, events and links – and much more. If you do not have WILNET once you log into the Learning Hub, email helpdesk@rmit.edu.au to request access. |
