Changes to the student contribution in 2008

In the 2007 Budget, the Commonwealth Government introduced changes to higher education funding effective from 2008. The changes included an increase in the maximum student contribution amount for units of study (courses) in accounting, administration, economics and commerce.

The student contribution (fees) for new Higher Education students in Commonwealth supported places undertaking accounting, administration, economics and commerce units of study (courses) will increase in 2008.

Maximum student contribution amounts for these units of study (courses) are now set at the same level as courses in law, medicine, veterinary science and dentistry. In 2008 this amount is $8,499 per course.

Students commencing in 2008

The increased maximum student contribution amount will only affect you if you commence a program after 1 January 2008, or if you have not studied as a Commonwealth supported student prior to 1 January 2008.

If you commence study in a new program in 2008 you will be liable for the new student contribution charges as outlined on the Fees web site.

Example 1

A student commences a Bachelor of Social Science. In her first year, she enrols in eight courses of equal weighting (8 x 12 credit point courses) which comprise a standard full-time load (96 credit points). She enrols in six art courses and two accounting courses. Her student contribution for 2008 would be calculated as follows:
