Overall annual maximum fee

As well as the maximum amounts at each qualification level there is also an overall annual maximum fee. At RMIT, the overall annual maximum fee regardless of how many TAFE programs you enrol in and at what qualification level the maximum you will be charged in 2010 is $2,000.

Example: student's fees capped at the 2010 overall annual maximum fee

During the course of 2010, the student undertakes 720 hours of a Skills Building program ($1.62 per nominal hour) and 400 hours of a Skills Deepening program ($3.25 per nominal hour).

Based on their enrolled hours, the student is charged $1,000 (capped at the maximum rate) for their Skills Building enrolments and $1,300 for their Skills Deepening enrolments. With the overall annual maximum fee, the total tuition fee amount charged for the student’s 2010 enrolments will be capped at $2,000.

Fee exemptions and concessions for students in government-subsidised places

Some students in government-subsidised places may be entitled to an exemption or concession on their tuition fees. This includes students with a Health Care Card or who receive government benefits through Centrelink. The concession rate for each program level is equivalent to the minimum fee rate for that level (except for the Skills Deepening level).

Applicants who believe they are eligible must submit an Application for Exemption/Concession form and provide supporting evidence of eligibility before an exemption or concession can be provided. Forms are available from and can be submitted to any campus Hub.

Skills Deepening (Diploma and Advanced Diploma) students

From 1 July, Skills Deepening (Diploma and Advanced Diploma students) will no longer be eligible for TAFE fee concessions. However, Diploma and Advanced Diploma students may be eligible for the new VET FEE-HELP loan scheme to defer fees through the tax system.

Tuition fees for Indigenous Students

The Indigenous Completions Initiative announced in 2004 has been extended to cover tuition fees for all enrolments of Indigenous students in 2010. Indigenous students who enrol in TAFE programs in 2010 are entitled to the minimum tuition fee amount at all program levels including the Skills Deepening level where no concession is available..

How to calculate your fees

Calculating the TAFE student contribution for a program

TAFE fees for government subsidised places are calculated based on the nominal hours of your enrolment. To calculate your tuition fees, multiply the total nominal hours for your course or program by the fees per nominal hour for the appropriate qualification level listed in the table above.

Maximum fee: your tuition fees will "cap" at the maximum rate of the qualification level of the program enrolment.

Example 1: Tuition fee per nominal hour for one program

A student is enrolled in a Skills Building program with 400 nominal hours. The tuition fee per nominal hour for the Skills Building qualification is $1.62.

Therefore, the tuition fee will be 400 x $1.62 = $648

Example 2: Tuition fee per nominal hour for multiple programs

A student is enrolled in a Foundation Skills program with 200 nominal hours and a Skills Creation program with 300 nominal hours. The fees per nominal hour for Foundation studies is $1.08 and the fees per nominal hour for Skills Creation is $1.40.

Therefore, the tuition fee will be

200 x $1.08 = $216 (Foundation Skills)

300 x $1.40 = $420 (Skills Creation)

Total fees: $216 + $420 = $636

Example 3: Tuition fee per nominal hour with maximum fee for qualification level

During the course of 2010, a student enrols in a Skills Creation program with 720 nominal hours. The fees per nominal hour for Skills Creation is $1.40 with a maximum fee of $875. Although 720 times $1.40 is $1,008, the tuition fee will be capped at the maximum fee of $875. Therefore the tuition fee will be: $875.

Calculating the TAFE student contribution for individual courses or units

RMIT will apply the appropriate tuition fee mode for each course you enrol in, in compliance with the Victorian Ministerial Directions for Fees and Charges. Concession fees are only available at the Skills Deepening level for indigenous students.

How to calculate tuition fees for individual VET courses

Tuition fees for government subsidised Victorian students are calculated from the number of class hours and the hourly rate for each course or unit you enrol in, within a minimum and maximum range.

  • The minimum total tuition fee you could pay in 2010 is $225.
  • The maximum total tuition fee you could pay in 2010 is $2000.

Standard mode fee

To calculate fees for individual courses first refer to the ‘standard mode’ column. If the total of your tuition fees is between $225 and $2000 you will pay the standard mode fee for each unit.

Reduced mode fee

If you are enrolled in only one unit for 2010 and the fee indicated in the standard mode column is below the minimum tuition fee of $225 you will pay the ‘reduced mode’ fee for this unit. This means you will pay $225 for the unit.

Reduced mode fee less existing fees

If you are enrolled in more than one unit for 2010 and the (standard mode) total of your fees is below $225 you will pay the standard mode fee for the first unit. The cost of the second unit will be the minimum rate of $225 less the cost of the first unit.

Example: you study two units/courses in 2010

Unit of study hours

Hourly rate

Unit fee

Unit 1

50

3.25

$163

Unit 2

15

3.25

$49 + 13 =

$62

$212 + 13 = $225

As the fee total for the two units is $212 and the legislated mimimum fee you can pay is $225, for the second unit you pay $49 + 13 = $62.

Total fee for 2010 is the minimum tuition fee of $225

If you were enrolled in more than two units and the standard mode total amounted to less than the minimum required fee of $225, you would pay the standard mode fee for all courses except the last one.

For the last unit you would pay the standard mode + difference between the total and $225.

Maximum tuition fee of $2000 less existing total fees
Once a unit of study takes your total standard mode fees for 2010 over the maximum tuition fee of $2000 you will pay a reduced amount for the last unit.

Example: you study four units/courses in 2010

Unit of study hours

Hourly rate

Unit fee

Unit 1

180

3.25

$585

Unit 2

190

3.25

$618

Unit 3

160

3.25

$520

Unit 4

90

3.25

$293 - 16 =

$277

$2016 - 16 = $2000

As the actual fee for the last unit you are charged for takes your total fees to over $2000, the cost of the last unit is reduced to $277 so you only pay the maximum tuition fee of $2000

Total fee for 2010 is the maximum tuition fee of $2000

Capped mode fee

Once your fees have reached $2000, for any additional units/courses you study you will pay the 'capped mode' fee.
This means you will pay $0 for each subsequent unit.
