TAFE fees – New Zealand citizens

RMIT’s funding agreement with the Victorian Government states that Government funds may only be used to deliver training or further education to people in Victoria in the following categories:

  • Australian citizens
  • Permanent residents of Australia
  • East Timorese asylum seekers
  • New Zealand Special Category Visa (sub-class 444) Visa holders

Eligibility for government subsidised place

Under the Securing Jobs for Your Future - Skills for Victoriainitiative, from 1 July 2009 New Zealand citizens who are holders of the Special Category Visa (subclass 444) are eligible for government subsidised places.

What is a Special Category Visa?

The Special Category Visa (subclass 444) is a temporary visa automatically granted to New Zealand citizens who arrive in Australia who do not hold a permanent visa. This information is recorded electronically by the Australian government. It allows visa holders to live and work permanently in Australia so long as they remain citizens of New Zealand.

New Zealand TAFE students and FEE-HELP

New Zealand students are not permitted to defer payment of their TAFE tuition fees via any FEE-HELP scheme. Fees must be paid up-front.

Eligible students under the age of 25 at 1 January 2011 will be charged a concession fee of $100 for enrolments at the Skills Deepening level undertaken in 2011. For students aged 25 and over at 1 January 2011, no concession is available at the Skills Deepening level, however indigenous students will only be charged the minimum fee of $375.

The fee concession policy from 2012 will be subject to review by Skills Victoria in 2011.
