Alternatively, you may be able to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge before you start this course.

Course Description

This course is one of two advanced courses taught entirely in French from a total of eight courses in French offered at RMIT University. 

The course will build on your existing knowledge of the French language and culture through the study of contemporary issues affecting the French language as covered in the Francophone media.

You will analyse some of the social and historical aspects as well as the current context of the French language of in France, and other French speaking countries. 

All classes will be delivered in French, and emphasis will be placed on the development on the development of all language skills (oral/aural/reading/writing) in the French language with a particular emphasis on listening and writing skills. 

You will be encouraged to be responsible for your own learning and to build on your knowledge to a level where you can continue with further self-directed learning.

This course will complement the RMIT capabilities you are developing in your program. 

 


Course Learning Outcomes  

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:  

  1. Communicate increasingly fluently in both oral and written French on the topics studied
  2. Analyse and discuss a range of authentic materials in French
  3. Demonstrate ongoing independent learning
  4. Reflect and debate in French on sociolinguistic and socio-cultural topics. 


Overview of Learning Activities

A variety of structured in class activities provide opportunities to develop all your language skills (oral/aural/reading/writing) with a particular emphasis on listening and writing skills. 

Multimedia resources, and readings relating to socio-cultural topics will be introduced and discussed. You will be expected to participate actively in many pair and group activities and to use only French. Therefore, regular class attendance is essential to support your learning. 


Overview of Learning Resources

You may need to purchase a prescribed text and a recommended language dictionary. Multimedia teaching and learning resources and tools will also be used and made available through MyRMIT Studies. 

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. 

Assessment Tasks 

1. In class test: language & content 15% CLO1, CLO2

2. In class test: listening 15% CLO1, CLO2

3. Oral exam 30% CLO1, CLO2, CLO4

4. Essay (1500 words) 40%  CLO1, CLO2, CLO3, CLO4
