The School of Management at RMIT University held an inaugural event last month to celebrate excellence in learning and teaching. Academics from the School shared their experiences and innovations which led to positive student feedback in 2010.
Dr Afreen Huq explained research activities that she introduced to first-year Bachelor of Business (Entrepreneurship) students. Dr Huq was awarded the RMIT First Year Experience teaching award in recognition of this initiative.
Dr Caroline Tan discussed her approach to student engagement, which involves the use of personal stories, case studies and technology.
Dr Ngan Collins, Dr Cathy Brigden, Heather Douglas and Ian Woodruff outlined their innovations which yielded positive results. These include: the 4 Cs model of assessment (Comprehension, Commitment, Communication and Capability); an on-line accessible body and risk mapping tool; a large class team teaching initiative; and on-line learning activities.
Professor Sandra Jones discussed the outcomes of projects funded by College of Business grants.
“Feedback from international onshore students and sessional staff has been instrumental in enabling the development of an intercultural Resource Package that aims to assist the design of effective ways to develop students’ adaptability and flexibility in cross-cultural contexts,” Professor Jones said.
“This feedback also assisted in the development of a communication strategy designed to improve relationships between full-time and sessional staff.”
The School of Management will continue to celebrate learning and teaching excellence in 2011 through an integrated approach to business education. As part of this commitment a “learning and teaching wall of excellence” has been established.
