RMIT disciplines among top in world

RMIT University has been ranked among the world's Top 100 universities in three new areas in 2012 - for Communication and Media studies, Computer Science and Information Systems, and Pharmacy and Pharmacology studies.

Subject areas which remained within the Top 100 since the previous year were Engineering (Civil and Structural), and Accounting and Finance.

Subject areas which ranked in the Top 150 were Engineering (Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing; and Chemical), white Economics and Econometrics, and Engineering (Electrical and Electronic) remained in the Top 200

The annual rankings, by independent international research firm Quacquarelli Symons (QS), are the first in the world to rank universities at the level of individual fields of study.

Rankings are based on a formula which combines academic reputation, employer reputation and citations for research papers.

"These are very gratifying results for RMIT," Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Margaret Gardner AO, said.

"We have long enjoyed a reputation for the strong employability of our graduates, but these latest QS rankings show this reputation reflected in this global ranking.

"It's very satisfying to see RMIT ranked in the Top 100 in these five fields, which also reflect strong citations for research."

Professor Gardner said 11 individual study fields featured in the QS report for 2012 were ranked in the Top 200 around the world, including Education, which did not feature in the Top 200 list previously.
