Capital works program

RMIT University has embarked upon a $500 million capital works program, which will be rolled out over a five-year period.

This represents the largest expenditure on capital works in RMIT’s 121-year history.

One of RMIT’s key objectives is to continuously improve upon its suite of learning, teaching and research spaces so that students and staff can enjoy world-class, state-of-the-art facilities that are engaging, sustainable and safe.

The capital works program will:

  • Introduce two architecturally innovative buildings to the City campus – the Swanston Academic building and the Design Hub
  • Employ environmentally sustainable design practices for new and refurbished buildings;
  • Consolidate Schools within the same Academic Portfolio across clusters of closely grouped buildings;
  • Roll out major, state-of-the-art learning, teaching and research facilities across the City, Bundoora and Brunswick campuses;
  • Provide facilities that enhance staff and student connectivity and interdisciplinary interaction;
  • Upgrade and expand current student services including the Library and retail outlets;
  • Provide new staff accommodation; and
  • Develop outdoor recreation spaces, including sporting facilities and student and staff lawns.

The Alumni Courtyard on the City campus has been returfed with environmentally sustainable artificial turf, which will save RMIT around 16,000 litres of water per week.
