Centre for Design
The Centre for Design at RMIT University (CfD) has a long and successful history of 23 years of research in the areas of sustainability, design, building and social science. Set up in 1989, CfD was the National Key Centre for Design in the early 1990s and had a major focus on environmentally sustainable design until 2005. Since then this focus has broadened further to include building science and social science dimensions of sustainable urban systems.
Since 2005, CfD has generated over $13 million of externally funded research and innovation activity across four key areas research areas.

- Sustainable Products and Packaging
- Climate Change and Social Context
- Sustainable Building Innovation Laboratory (SBi Lab)
Building on the success of the Centre for Design, RMIT is now creating three new research Centres which, together, will incorporate the existing Centre and provide a platform for further growth in research on RMIT strategic research priority areas including ‘The future of Cities’ and ‘Sustainability and Climate Change’.
