In the Certificate IV in Information Technology, you will develop your technical skills in a range of areas to prepare you for a career in IT.

You will explore communication and research, critical thinking, emerging technologies, networking, network security, virtualisation, programming, web technologies, server technologies and client support. You’ll be trained in a range of information and communication technology (ICT) disciplines to meet the needs of industry.

Your studies in this certificate will prepare you to play an important role in meeting the needs of the computing and technology industry. You’ll build skills and knowledge in software development, databases, web programming, configuring desktops, servers, networking, network security and data integrity.

Details

Learning and teaching

This certificate is taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, workshops, practical/laboratory exercises, work-simulated projects, and face-to-face classes.

Assessment methods

Ongoing assessment throughout the semester includes examinations, reports, presentations, group projects, laboratory projects and practical assignments.

Learning at RMIT

The types of classes you have will depend on the course you’re studying. Classes are offered in various formats designed to provide meaningful engagement with staff, industry and peers and provide for access and use of spaces where learning can be applied and active, including an array of specialised equipment.

Most RMIT courses do not include passive large-scale classes such as lectures, instead the content traditionally provided in lectures is made available online. This may be in the form of readings, videos or other on-demand learning materials. This content will also support the basis of interactive learning that takes place in on-campus classes.

This certificate closely aligns with the current needs of industry, and students have opportunities to attend important industry events such as the annual Cisco Live Student Summit.

Student project work closely simulates industry deployment scenarios and practical assignments are accurate workplace simulations.

The knowledge and skills you will acquire throughout this qualification and how they can be applied in your career are described in the learning outcomes.

Through your studies in this certificate, you will develop skills and knowledge in database creation, web programming, software development, the installation and management of simple networks, and be trained in network administration and security, either as an independent ICT specialist or as part of a team.

You will also build skills in the basic use of a range of technologies to provide second and third-level diagnostic support to ICT users.

You'll be trained in the following areas of information technology:

  • networking
  • Unix
  • virtualisation
  • web
  • databases
  • critical thinking
  • communications and research
  • programming
  • windows system administration.

Understanding pathways

Undertaking a certificate, diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree can help you meet the entry requirements for your preferred degree. These qualifications often provide credit, reducing the duration of your bachelor degree.

Even though there are no formal pathways into this course, there are often other ways you can gain entry.

Credit, recognition of prior learning, professional experience and accreditation from a professional body can reduce the duration of your study by acknowledging your earlier, relevant experience.

Credit and exemptions will be assessed consistent with the principles of the RMIT Credit Policy.

Graduates of this course will be eligible for exemptions from the Associate Degree in Information Technology, subject to meeting the entry requirements. For more information, view pathway details, or contact Study@RMIT.
