Course Description
Environmental microbiology covers one important aspect of environmental microbiology: wastewater treatment and recycling. The main topics covered will be industrial processing of wastewater, quality assurance of treated product, (biosolids), microbiological safety of biosolids, regulations regarding use of biosolids and options for recycling to agricultural and other uses.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course has a strong industry focus. After learning about the industrial processes of wastewater treatment, students will have the opportunity to visit wastewater treatment plants that use different processes. The knowledge gained from studying this course will equip students for a career in the water industry.
After completing ths course students will have a theoretical and practical understanding of the industrial processes involved in wastewater treatment and the factors that must be considered prior to releasing treated material for use in agriculture.
