Course Description

Through practical workshops this course introduces and explores a range of processes and techniques of lithography as a medium for drawing. Line and wash techniques will be developed over a series of projects. This elective provides an introduction to lithographic skills processes, such as, preparing a stone, drawing on a stone, processing the stone with adding and subtracting to your image as well as providing ongoing students with an opportunity to extend existing skills. You will gain an understanding of safe handling of materials and processes within the lithography studio, and how to apply these to the visual expression of conceptual principles. 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

For students studying BP201 the PLOs that this course contributes to are: 

  • find creative solutions to constraints and challenges in a fine art context 
  • effectively communicate via artistic production in a range of media and modes with awareness of and sensitivity to a range of local and global contexts and cultures 
  • develop a critically reflective arts practice, in order to continually develop, change and plan for a future that is both informed and improved by arts practice. 


Course Learning Outcomes 

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:  

  1. develop a level of technical competence in the lithographic printmaking processes covered. 
  2. understand the nature of lithographic printmaking and its possibilities. 
  3. be proficient in preparing, drawing, processing and printing from lithographic stones. 
   


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectures, tutorials, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.  

Learning will essentially be studio based via practical class demonstrations and individual consultation with the lecturer. Set projects presented by the lecturer and/or negotiated with the student will cover a number of lithographic processes as appropriate for the project. Students will also conduct individual visual and technical research.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. 

Assessment is via folio submission, and is conducted by the lecturer. Details will be available through the lecturer prior to the time of assessment.

  • Task 3 Technical Notes/Journal/Class Engagement 20% CLO 1&2
