Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

You should be familiar with electronic device characteristics and have a good knowledge in physics, chemistry, material science, mathematics and signal processing.

Course Description

This course introduces the concepts of modern sensors and actuators. The subject aims are as follows:

- to explain some of the most important physical principles applied in sensors and actuators
- to show examples of the way that these principles are exploited in proprietary devices
- to highlight some of the most fundamental performance limitations which arise in these devices employing different physical principles

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes:

• High levels of technical competence in the field
• Be able to apply problem solving approaches to work challenges and make decisions using sound engineering methodologies

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Interpret physical principles applied in sensors and actuators
  2. Design and fabricate sensors with desired physical and chemical properties
  3. Identify various types of sensors including thermal, mechanical, electrical, electromechanical and optical sensors
  4. Implement sensors for physical, chemical, and biochemical applications.
