Course Description

 

In this course you learn the principles and practices of financial management, planning and performance appraisal as a foundation to managing the performance of engineering and technological organisations.  These principles and practices are essential for effective management of large scale engineering developments irrespective of whether what industry these developments are in.  You acquire knowledge to manage financial performance in those organisations.  You will develop your knowledge and capability with a series of learning activities that allow you to apply accounting principles and practices, understand and interpret financial statements, develop strategies to mitigate taxation implications, and most important of all, enable you to plan and prepare budgets for managing the engineering developments.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

Upon successful completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Develop the model for describing the management structure, stakeholders and financial control of an engineering project
  2. Develop the strategy and plan the actions required to adjust the financial system to achieve project goals
  3. Apply accounting principles and practice to analyse the financial statements of the given engineering company over a number of years.
  4. Within the constraints of the financial status of the company, develop the proposal for changes to some of the engineering projects managed by the company
  5. Justify your proposal with the outcomes of the financial analysis on the company’s financial data

Learning activities throughout the course include: Lectures, tutorials, presentations, group discussions, project work, and computer based analysis exercises.

All lecture PowerPoint slides, model answers of exercises in the lectures and tests in previous semesters are available from the course Blackboard (available through myRMIT).  Multimedia files related to the topics will also be uploaded to the respective weekly folders.  Except guest lectures (due to copyright restrictions), all lectures in this course will be recorded on Blackboard Collaborate. 

There is a prescribed text for this course. A list of journal articles will be used as reading materials.  Copies of these articles can be obtained from RMIT Library journal subscriptions.

Description:  The test is an assessment of your analytical abilities in a time and data constrained situation to assess financial cases and develop plans and controls quantitatively.
