The course does not require detailed mathematical skills but does require a broad understanding of environmental issues and capability to use internet searching and web-based documents.


Course Description

Energy is a key element in social and economic development, and has major environmental impacts. Existing energy use is clearly ecologically unsustainable. This course introduces energy as a social, economic and environmental issue. It facilitates development of an understanding of energy policy and practice issues so that the student will be able to implement basic energy management strategies at home and in business, and develop and evaluate energy policies and strategies. Emphasis is placed on energy issues of relevance to urban and regional planning, energy management within organizations, and government policy and programs. Energy provides a useful case study of the challenges involved in social and technological change and how governments and organizations respond.

  • the roles of energy in social and economic development
  • the environmental impacts of energy supply and use
  • patterns and trends in energy supply and use
  • energy policies and policies influencing energy supply and use at the national, state and local levels
  • scenarios of future energy supply and demand and evaluation of their consistency with principles of ecological sustainability

To develop skills in:

  • Evaluation of energy use patterns in homes and business
  • Assessment and analysis of effectiveness of policies and strategies
  • Use of case studies as a basis for development of policy
  • Research, presentations and writing
