Course Description

This course is designed to introduce you to the concept of globalisation and key processes associated with it. These processes shape the world of today and tomorrow, and this course explores how they can be engaged with constructively to address global challenges and to design and contribute to shared global futures. This course considers how such engagement can occur and the role of research-based insights that help to usefully frame international and local events around us as occurring in a global context. 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes 

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • Apply a body of theoretical and practical knowledge of international relations, global cultures, language and economic issues to your professional practice or further study 
  • Critically analyse, synthesize and reflect on knowledge about a rapidly changing world derived from multiple sources, perspectives and values systems 
  • Communicate effectively in international and cross-cultural contexts, and facilitate collaborative partnerships within diverse communities of practice, using appropriate formats, media and styles 
  • Assist in the identification of needs, the design, planning, resourcing and implementation of research and development projects in international and cross-cultural settings 
 


Course Learning Outcomes 

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to: 

1. recognise global processes and identify their impacts at local levels and describe theories of globalisation.
2. analyse local and regional situations in a global context. 
3. analyse local and global issues in the context of globalisation, and begin to develop new directions and solutions.
4. constructively identify international and cross-cultural issues requiring research and to identify areas for future possible project work in localised settings in the international and cross-cultural area.

A range of learning experiences are planned for this course, including weekly lectures and tutorial activities, accompanied by regular self-directed study and some off-campus activities.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment tasks may include oral presentations, short assignments, and an extended essay. Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
