Course Description

 

This course is the second of six consecutive courses in Greek offered at RMIT University.

The course aims to enhance your oral/aural skills and to further the basic writing and reading skills acquired in Greek 1, and practical knowledge of Greek culture in a wider range of personal and social situations and contexts.

It will provide you with opportunities to apply the language in a variety of situations including information seeking, story-telling and reporting. You will also continue to improve language proficiency in pronunciation and intonation. Written skills will be strengthened by guided writing practice.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:


 

  • Communicate in oral and written Greek in a range of familiar social contexts, including participating in formal and informal conversations, describe past and future events, experiences and people, and write short passages accurately in basic Greek applying appropriate grammatical structures
  • Read, interpret and comprehend familiar authentic spoken, written and multimedia Greekmaterials
  • Evaluate and begin to apply language learning strategies and techniques to develop your language skills, and demonstrate independent learning
  • Identify and discuss areas of cultural values and norms in Greece and contrast them with the Australian context (in English)
  • Describe your own cultural values and norms, and make comparison to Greek culture, beginning to reflect on and develop your knowledge of cross-cultural communication issues and challenges


Overview of Learning Activities

A variety of structured in class exercises provide opportunities to develop your skills, with emphasis placed on communicative skill building, guided and natural conversations, and hypothetical situations.

 


Overview of Learning Resources

You may need to purchase a prescribed text and a recommended language dictionary. Multimedia teaching and learning resources and tools will also be used, and made available through MyRMIT Studies. 


Overview of Assessment

 

You will be required to submit a range of assessments throughout the semester to demonstrate how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and capabilities. Assessment tasks may involve working independently and/or as part of a pair or team on a range of written, oral and interactive tasks (for example, in-class tests, essays, class presentations, group projects, debates, learning diaries, final exams etc).

You will also receive verbal and/or written feedback from your lecturers and/or peers on your assessment tasks.

Weighting on the assessment tasks for postgraduate students will vary with an additional or expanded assessment task.
