Course Description

You will be introduced to the concept of information discovery as a primary skill in the information management area. You will investigate the concepts of information needs and behaviour and relate this to your own information literacy development. The context is set around a process approach to the identification, access and critical evaluation of the need for information as well as the style, format, access to and delivery of that information. In the increasingly ubiquitous digital environment, the ability to effectively search and critically evaluate information as well as design and produce appropriate information products is of prime importance. You will be introduced to a wide range of information sources and platforms and given the opportunity to become professionally competent in their use.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

`

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Apply critical and reflective thinking to the development of search skills for discovery of information using a variety of online or print resources, databases and platforms.
  2. Demonstrate changing levels of information literacy through the ability to effectively use complex information discovery tools.
  3. Design customised information products responding to client requirements.
  4. Use bibliographic and digital presentation tools to effectively communicate information.

Overview of Learning Activities

Key concepts and skills and their application will be explained and illustrated in lectures, seminars and online notes with opportunities to discuss their use in case studies during tutorials and group discussions (including online forums). Case based problems will be used to develop your searching and evaluation of information skills. There will be opportunities to hear guest speakers and Audio/Video of all lectures and presentations will be available.

In this course you will be encouraged to be an active learner. Your learning will be supported through various in-class and online activities comprising individual and group work. These may include quizzes; assignments; prescribed readings; sourcing, researching and analysing specific information; solving problems; conducting presentations; producing written work and collaborating with peers on set tasks or projects.
