Course Description

This course focuses on the processes, techniques and issues involved in providing information to clients in a variety of settings. Issues include information literacy and managing information collections and services. Skills acquired will include providing instruction to clients.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Identify and investigate information needs and information behaviour of individuals or groups to design, deliver and evaluate customised information services and products.
  2. Facilitate the acquisition, licensing or creation of information in a range of media and formats in order to manage collection building, preservation and capacity planning.
  3. Effectively communicate with information users to assess information needs and critically evaluate information to provide information as required.
  4. Discuss the need for information skills in the community to facilitate the promotion of reading and delivery of information literacy education


Overview of Learning Activities

You will experience a variety of learning experiences, online or face-to-face, from a range of possible activities including discussion, reading, case studies, lectures and class exercises. Students may be required on occasion to present information to the class online or face-to-face.
Lectures and tutorial activities are designed to introduce a variety of issues relevant to satisfying the information needs of clients in a range of contexts.

Various learning resources are available online through myRMIT/Canvas. In addition to topic notes, assessment details and a study schedule, you may also be provided with links to relevant online information, readings, audio and video clips and communication tools to facilitate collaboration with your peers and to share information.

Additional resources and/or sources to assist your learning will be identified by your course coordinator and will be made available to you as required during the teaching period.

If you are a face-to-face student you will need a mobile computing device for use in Building 80, both in class time and in the building generally.
