Course Description
All information professionals must understand the ways in which information is organised for retrieval and be able to communicate this knowledge to information seekers. This course will enable you to understand how information organisation and retrieval are enacted in the information sector. The course will develop knowledge and practical skills in resource description and subject analysis (cataloguing and classification) and explore broad approaches to information organisation.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:
- Explain and apply the key principles, concepts and standards of information seeking and use of retrieval systems in information organisations
- Identify and discuss the importance of information technology and architecture to determine the structure, design and flows of information which adhere to recognized usability and accessibility guidelines
- Demonstrate effective communication and teamwork skills to work collaboratively with information technology service providers
- Create accurate and standards-driven metadata for enhanced and persistent access to and retrieval of information resources in an online information environment
Overview of Learning Activities
You will experience a variety of learning experiences, online or face-to-face, from a range of possible activities including discussion, reading, case studies, guest speakers, lectures, experiential learning and class exercises. Lectures and tutorial activities are designed to introduce a variety of issues relevant to the organisation of information and access to it in a variety of information settings.
