Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

You should have satisfactorily completed the pre requisite courses, MANU1081 Fabric Technology  and MANU1079 Yarn Technology, before you commence this course.

Course Description

This course will provide you with the skills and knowledge in knitwear design and production, and Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) Systems in related manufacturing processes and techniques.

The course aims to develop your ability to research knitted product and knitted fabric trends; and develop knitwear utilising knowledge of yarn selection, stitch formation, fabric swatching, calculation of the requirements of raw materials and engineering of a knitwear garment according to performance requirements. You will explore different categories of production methods of knitted products including Cut Stitch-Shaped, Fully-Fashioned and Integral methods.

Topics covered include: the analysis of knitwear fabric, fibre content, yarn type, fabric/garment weight, fabric construction and garment shaping. You will utilise Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) systems to design and produce a range of knitwear fabrics and a sample knitwear garment where applicable.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

1. Apply sustainable practices related to fashion and textiles issues.

2. Conceptualise, integrate and organise information in order to resolve complex issues related to fashion and textiles product development.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

1. Identify and analyze different categories of production methods of knitted garments.

2. Analyse and evaluate a range of common knitwear fabrics.

3. Conduct knitted product trend research through market research, textile and fashion journals and relate this research to the Australian TCF market.

4. Construct and present storyboards depicting mood and inspiration trends applicable to knitwear products.

5. Design and develop a range of knitwear fabrics according to the identified trends by selecting colour, yarn and fabric construction.

6. Develop CAD/CAM program for manufacture of a knitwear fabrics.
