Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

This course would best serve students with a basic competency in Protools (or equivalent audio workstation). Whilst highly recommended, this is not, however, a compulsory pre-requisite.


Course Description

This course will introduce you to the use of the recording studio as a creative tool. You will be presented with an overview of the history, philosophy and techniques in utilizing the recording studio for creative outcomes. Using listening examples, you will learn how to objectively analyse and dissect pieces of music to reveal the techniques and approaches used in producing a wide range of audio material. This will be reinforced by practical examination of a variety of these techniques through using the recording studio. In your work for this course you will be expected to use the skills and information you garner in this course to develop and experiment with your own production style and approach.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  • use the recording studio and other music/sound tools and approaches for creative outcomes
  • develop  objective listening and sonic analysis skills
  • discuss the development of production techniques/philosophy and the role of a ‘producer’ in the creative process
  • create, develop and manage projects from a production perspective
  • use production techniques such as mixing, EQ, compression, use of effects, re-mixing, sampling, programming, sequencing, mash-ups, dub mixing, processing chains, mastering and delivery


At the conclusion of this course you will be able to successfully analyse a variety of production approaches from a range of genres, and begin to understand the various technical processes involved in each.


Overview of Learning Activities

• A weekly 3 hour lecture/workshop for critical listening and analysis as well as technical demonstrations of production techniques
• Additional listening and research outside of class time.
