Course Description

In this course you will build on your learning in NURS1023 Child and Family Health Assessment and explore the range of health issues that can impact on children and families in the community. Identification, assessment, management and referral of these issues will be considered in terms of the supports and agencies available to families. The concept of vulnerability and vulnerable families introduced in Family and Community Studies will be further examined in light of the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Nurse’s role, care planning and health promotion. Risk assessment and the MCH Nurse’s responsibility for mandatory reporting will also be critically discussed here.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the development of the Program Learning Outcomes in the following way:

  • PLO 2:  Apply reflective thinking and critical analysis to MCH nursing and demonstrate a sound understanding of the legislation, ethical codes and professional guidelines that direct professional practice.
  • PLO 3:  Critically evaluate contemporary research findings and integrate these to provide comprehensive, safe and effective evidence-based health care for children, families and the community.
  • PLO 4:  Demonstrate advanced clinical MCH nursing skills including infant and child physical and developmental assessment, maternal and family health assessment and competent use of screening tools.
  • PLO 6:  Communicate effectively with children, families and groups to engage and support clients, working in partnership with families and interdisciplinary health teams to promote, assess and support.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Critically apply specialist MCH nursing knowledge to common child health issues with an emphasis on identifying, assessing and discussing the nursing management required and the rationale for decisions to refer for further assessment.
  2. Utilise comprehensive knowledge of psychosocial issues impacting on families to engage and support families and refer them for further assessment and management as appropriate.
  3. Explain the concept of vulnerability and how ‘being vulnerable’ adds further complexity to child and family health issues.
  4. Apply specialist MCH nursing knowledge to work in partnership with vulnerable families to plan care and promote health.
  5. Synthesise knowledge of risk and protective factors impacting on children, parents and families and demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate these to assess potential risks for a child or children.
  6. Integrate assessment findings and knowledge of risk assessment, professional guidelines and legislation to adhere and comply with mandatory reporting requirements.
