Course Description
This course builds on knowledge and skills gained in NURS1125 Principles and Practice of Nursing 1. Foundational nursing skills in the areas of nutritional, integumentary, abdominal and neurological assessment, problem identification, documentation of healthcare data and management of functional health status will be developed to equip students with the ability to undertake supportive interventions that are appropriate to patient needs. You will be introduced to a range of diagnostic interventions and nursing skills related to the operative environment and wound management. Content includes exploring the risks associated with the health care environment and identifying resource and sustainability issues associated with patient care.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for the Bachelor of Nursing Program BP032 in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Australia, Registered Nurse Standards for Practice:

Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills of applied health and physical examination in the areas of nutritional, integumentary, abdominal and neurological assessment.
- Integrate basic diagnostics into the assessment criteria for patient care.
- Consider the management and nursing requirements for patients experiencing episodic alterations to health.
- Identify the role of hospitalisation in management and nursing care of patients with altered health states and its impact on families.
- Elaborate the features of comprehensive, safe, professional and ethical nursing care to achieve identified individual / group outcomes.
- Discuss resource use and sustainability issues associated with patient care.
Overview of Learning Activities
You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.

Overview of Assessment
This course contains hurdle requirements. All hurdle requirements for this course are indicated clearly in the assessment regime that follows, against the relevant assessment task(s) and all have been approved by the College Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching).
A hurdle requirement is necessary in order to demonstrate to the accrediting body (Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council) that you are competent and are being sufficiently assessed against practice-focused professional standards throughout the course of your program.
