Course Description

In this course you will investigate colour as a form of nonverbal communication and interpretation of colour is affected by physical qualities, culture and society. You will explore colour through the psychological effect portrayed in cinema, photography, painting, music and food.

You will also examine several theorists in the visual arts and investigate dimensions of colour, optical illusions and colour illuminants.
 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Discuss colour theory in the context of communication practice.
  • Interpret how painters and photographers from the 19th & 20th Century created their own individual style through the use of colour.
  • Describe how cool and warm colours are used to create moods and tensions in Still Imaging and Cinematography.
  • Produce images using colour to convey meaning.


This is an elective, which will complement the capabilities you are developing in your program.

The studio will be presented through a variety of activities including workshops, experimentation, lectures, critical analysis, discussion, practice, presentation and reflection.

Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning.
