Course Description

The course is delivered through face to face lectures, tutorials and presentations.

This course will help you pursue a career in gallery or museum management in the cultural and creative industries. It is designed to provide you with an understanding of principles and practices, as well as to create a forum for critical analysis, debate and discussion by offering access to the expertise of high-profile industry professionals.

You will explore the range of career choices in the gallery and museum management sector to build independent research, critical thinking and problem solving skills. The focus of the course is to provide you with access to, and opportunities to learn from, the direct experiences of high-level industry professionals. This course will help you to develop or further develop professional overviews and career-building strategies. 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

MC280 M of Art (Arts Management)

  • Attain appropriate and relevant arts management knowledge, with the ability to critique, use and apply that knowledge across a range of situations, enabling effective judgements in dealing with new an emerging issues in the field
  • Carry our self-directed learning and independent research to develop your individual arts management practice and locate your work globally within an appropriate conceptual and theoretical context
  • Demonstrate the skills of research, analysis and presentation within professional and academic fields
  • Engage critically in theoretical, historical, social, legal, environmental and cultural contexts with reference to the arts management industry context


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to: 

  1. Articulate the philosophical principles, governance structures and fundng concerns of galleries and museums in the context of contemporary change. 
  2. Research, analyse and evaluate the contemporary and historical forces that shape opportunities and challenges for galleries and museums
  3. Apply a critical perspective to the depth and diversity of roles within the cultural and creative industries including that of creative practitioners
  4. Build on knowledge of the gallery and museum sector by utilising the experience and insight of industry professionals.


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectures, tutorials, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both. 

You will be required to conduct independent research in order to find references beyond the provided reading.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.

Assessment Task 1: 20% Museums and Galleries - Venue evaluation 1500 words

Assessment Task 2: 30% The Exhibition - Presentation  
CLOs: 2, 3 

Assessment Task 3: 50% The Roles of Galleries and Museums - Essay 3500 words 
CLOs: 1, 2, 3, 4
