Course Description

This course aims at addressing the issues relevant to managing a networked enterprise in today’ s business and information technology environment. It specifically focuses on those issues that arise from the use of networks in business. These issues will provide the basis for lectures, class discussion, assignments and group sessions throughout the course which is delivered in workshop mode. Areas that will be examined are:

• Management of Outsourcing
• Network Physical Infrastructure
• Network Software Infrastructure
• Protecting the Networked Enterprise
• Email and Communications in the Networked Enterprise
• Virtual Communities
• Teleworking
• Distributed Software Development
• Remote Management
• Managing Learning in the Networked Enterprise


An important element of the course is class interaction between students and the subject leader. Real world experiences of participants are surfaced with the objective of achieving collective learning and ensuring the course is as relevant as possible to business and IT practice in Australia today.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

At the conclusion of this course, you will have developed the following capabilities:

  • Ability to apply a range of relevant theories to the use of networks in the enterprise
  • Ability to analyse the impact of networks on a particular enterprise
  • Ability to adjust IT Governance strategies to allow for the use of networks
  • Ability to manage the change that networks cause in business processes


At the conclusion of this course you will be able to:

  • Determine how the use of particular networking technologies affect the competitive advantage of an enterprise
  • Evaluate the use of networks in a particular enterprise
  • Know the issues that are affecting the use of networks in business
  • Analyse how enterprises can use networks to improve their business processes
  • Evaluate the introduction of new networking technologies and their likelihood of success

A weekly 3 hour lecture/seminar/workshop will take place over the semester.
The breakdown of the three hours will vary from week to week.
