Course Description

Usability is a key quality attribute of information systems. This course provides both a broad theoretical and practical introduction to usability analysis, human-computer interaction and related aspects of human factors. Practical exercises include evaluation methods to critique the usability of interface designs.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The capabilities that are developed through the program in which you are enrolled are described in the Program Guide. This course contributes to the development of the capabilities in the following way.

It is expected that you will acquire the following capabilities:

  • Business Information Systems Development: Ability to analyse design, develop, implement and manage single, multi-user and distributed business information systems solutions using a range of tools and techniques, across a range of business contexts to meet various stakeholder requirements
  • Creative Business Solutions: Ability to critically analyse and synthesise creative and effective solutions to a range of problem/opportunity situations that add value to the business and its stakeholders
  • Management of Information Systems in a Global Business Context: Ability to align strategic business objectives with the development and governance of business information systems in a global context


At the conclusion of this course you should be able to:
 

  • Interpret, analyse and critique interaction designs for various types of information systems
  • Assimilate and synthesise guidelines, heuristics and good design principles to aide in improving user experience
  • Critically evaluate user interfaces and interaction designs
  • Enhance the usability of information systems created to solve business problems

In order to develop the stated course capabilities, you are expected to actively participate in the following learning activities:

  • Regular attendance and active participation in scheduled lectures and tutorials
  • Participation in small group discussions and in class presentations
  • Reading of course notes and other assigned reading materials
  • Satisfactory completion of assessment tasks

Overview of Assessment

The assessment for this course is on the basis of the satisfactory completion of a variety of tasks that may include individual class presentations, assignments and a final examination. The assignments may include both individual and group work components.

Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or online, through individual and group feedback on practical exercises and by individual consultation.
