Course Description

This course introduces students to the activities, issues and concerns involved in launching a new online business. The assumption is that the business is an SME.

If you are undertaking this course in Melbourne from semester 2, 2012 onward your class will be held in a device-equipped teaching space. Each student group will have access to a laptop. It is however recommended that you have access to a mobile computing device to allow greater flexibility in terms of where you can work on campus both in and outside class times.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to


• prepare a well-structured prototype business plan for an e-business initiative
• use a range of models and techniques during the planning, analysis and design stages (eg process maps, storyboarding, WYSIWIG editors,cf HTML editors) and to use tools to track client behaviour and payment options
• design and develop a prototype of a user-friendly, fast-loading and efficient website
• enhance website performance through search engine optimisation, niche marketing and analysis of customer buying behaviours
• understand the issues, concerns and risks involved in the development, implementation and ongoing maintenance of an e-Business venture
 


Upon completion of this course, students should be able:


• understand how organisations will need the Internet as a strategic resource.
• understand how organisations (government and businesses) will use the Internet for competitive advantage
• understand how change will impact on traditional and web-based businesses and value chains
• analyse the structural changes in a business as e-business goals are incorporated
• assess the impact on management structures and roles
• recognise the importance of the Internet in other disciplines such as marketing, accounting, finance and management on a global scale.
• understand how the Internet will provide the communications infrastructure
 


Overview of Learning Activities

Students are required to attend lectures, tutorial and laboratory session in a computer laboratory.

Students are expected to undertake extensive reading and investigation beyond the guided structure of the course. Use should be made of current industry situations and Internet based and library resources.

RMIT university will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.


Overview of Assessment

Assessment may include mid-semester tests, individual journals, individual assignments, and group assignments.

Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or online discussions, through individual and group feedback on practical exercises and by individual consultation.
