MANU1447 Textile Colouration & Modification

Course Description

This course will extend the knowledge and skills of Textile Colouration and Modification. Participants will acquire a conceptual overview of the finishing process, and detailed knowledge of the sequence of finishing processes.

Application of this knowledge will occur in the tracking of products through a variety of finishing treatments, conducting tests, identifying faults and rectification methods and finally preparing specifications to meet customer serviceability requirements.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

At the completion of the course the student will be able to explain the fundamental purposes of finishing, by being able to :-

1.1 Identify a range of fabric deficiencies in grey cloth.
1.2 Explain the finishing processes which eliminate a range of deficiencies.
1.3 Explain dimensional stability and how it is achieved in the finishing process.
1.4 Identify special properties which are attainable in the finishing process.
1.5 Prepare a report explaining the value adding processes achieved in the finishing of fabrics.

Students will be able to track and record the sequence of finishing processes for a range of fabrics, noting compliance with specifications. They will be able to -

2.1 Identify the preparatory finishing requirements for each fabric.
2.2 Identify and explain the process path and finishing machinery required for each fabric.
2.3 Collect data utilising laboratory testing techniques at each process point to establish the changing properties of the fabric and its compliance with specifications.
2.4 Identify faults/problems in regard to treatments and equipment and present methods of rectification,
2.5 Using the data, compile a report detailing and contrasting the finishing treatments and procedures required for a range of fabrics.

Students will be able to finish fabrics to a range of specific serviceabilities, by being able to:-.

3.1 Identify customer requirements for a range of fabrics.
3.2 Select appropriate finishing sequence, treatments and machinery for each fabric.
3.3 Perform sample finishing procedures in lab conditions.
3.4 Write a specification for each fabric.
3.5 Test fabrics against registered standards for appropriate performance.
3.6 Prepare a report documenting the investigative outcomes for each fabric.

The course is taught in a combination of practical/ laboratory classes and lectures and tutorials (to provide an understanding of the theoretical principles and concepts).

The outcome of this course will be assessed by a variety of methods such as skills test, eg. product analysis, research projects, questioning (oral or written), structured presentations.
