Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

First degree in an engineering discipline or a first degree of other disciplines plus minimum one year working experience in manufacturing industry.


Course Description

The course builds on the other Management tool-related subjects in the program. After this course the student will appreciate the benefits of planning with the hindsight of Performance Indicators and Benchmarking.

 

 




Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course is designed to give students the ability to understand the objectives of benchmarking and to equip students with skills to undertake a benchmarking program in a manufacturing organisation. Students will have a working knowledge of methodologies involved with selection of appropriate performance indicators and basis for comparison with world best practice.

The learning here is designed around individual and group learning through the undertaking of assignments.



On completion, the student will be able to:

· understand the elements involved with a benchmarking program
· adapt a generic benchmarking model to meet the requirements of benchmarking a specific process within a manufacturing organisation
· be aware of practical issues arising from a benchmarking program.
· understand the role of performance indicators in the manufacturing organisation
· select appropriate set of indicators
· relate performance indicators to world best practice standards
· evaluate office, factory and distribution performance.


Overview of Learning Activities

The lecture time is provided for a problem-based approach to understanding the concepts. Tutorial time will enable the student to work through the problems given in class.
Current practice issues will be the focus of the class and most of learning will be student-based learning.

Comprehensive course notes will be provided and students are encouraged to explore a wide range of published and unpublished material with the objective of introducing diversity to fellow students.
