Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

This course requires some pre-requisite courses such as Statistics and Probability, and Aerospace Design Introduction or Aviation Operation.

Course Description

This course introduces you to essential concepts of Reliability, Safety/Risk, Accident,  and Quality, and a number of techniques and methodologies associated with hazard identification and fault diagnosis; reliability modelling; human reliability;  airworthiness ; Crew resource management; Air trafic control; Aircraft maintenance etc.

Key areas of study are:

• Reliability fundamental theories

• Hazard identification and Fault diagnosis techniques

• Risk management

•Aviation safety system management

• Human factors and Human reliability;

• Crew Resource Management and pilot judgment;

• Accident investigation and rescue procedure

• Aircraft maintenance and overhaul procedures

•  Engineering system engineering; And Logistics;

• Safety and reliability feedback information system and databases;

• Airworthiness Requirements;

• Total quality assurance system
.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

At the conclusion of this course you will have developed your capabilities in:

• technical competence: this course prepares you to be able to understand the concepts of reliability, safety, and quality in different phases of aircraft operation;
• integrative perspective: you will be introduced to a holistic awareness of a range of factors that impact on risk in aviation operations;
• professional skills: your capabilities relating to research, analysis, communication and working in teams will be improved.

On completion of this course, you will be expected to be able to:
1. demonstrate a thorough understanding of the concepts of reliability, safety, and quality in different phases of aircraft operation – you will be assessed on your ability to discuss, interpret and apply these concepts;
2. demonstrate working skills in relation to hazard identification, fault diagnosis, accident investigation, and quality audit etc.;
3. demonstrate ability to develop adequate methodologies and procedures for safety and reliability assessment, airworthiness requirements, total quality control;
4. demonstrate ability to provide an analytical structure through which some pilot judgment and aeronautical decision involving risk can be made.
5. demonstrate clear insight into accident investigations, aircraft maintenance, Total Quality Control (TQC), and ISO9000 – you will be assessed on your ability to discuss and apply relevant methodologies.

Overview of Learning Activities

Your learning will take place through a mix of formal lectures and tutorials/workshops, and through assignment work.

Overview of Learning Resources

Course-related resources will be provided on the RMIT Distributed Learning System (DLS). These will include learning guides, problem sheets and solutions, auxiliary information generated by the course lecturer(s), reference texts, and approved links to useful material on external web-sites.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment will be through individual assigments.  A final examination will be used to measure the level to which you can demonstrate ability to explain a critical understanding of key concepts through discussion and analysis of industry and its practices.
