Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
Students should have a understanding of basic physiology and biochemistry. Pre-requisites ONPS2192, BIOL2272 and BIOL2273
Course Description
This course aims to prepare the student in three important areas of clinical practice. It is divided into three modules:
- 1) Basic Nutrition
- 2) Public health and wellness
- 3) Mental health and communication.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Basic Nutrition: This foundation knowledge sets up the student to understand the important area of clinical nutrition, taught in the following masters program.
Public Health and Wellness: This broad area equips the student for preparation as a primary contact practitioner. Non-musculoskeletal issues will always arise in primary practice and these areas are addressed in this module.
Mental health and communication. This module equips the student with the basic skills required to interview and communicate with a client from a psychological perspective.
Overview of Learning Activities
1) Basic Nutrition: This subject looks at macronutrients (proteins, fats and carbohydrates, alcohol, water) and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals) as well as food labelling and an introduction to nutritional supplementation. Relevance to the practice of chiropractic covered.
2) Public Health and Wellness: Current important issues in public health are discussed.
3) Mental health and commuincation. This module will explore interpersonal communication skills including effective listening, questioning and appropriate feedback procedures.
