Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Assumed knowledge: Fluid Mechanics of Mechanical Systems or an equivalent undergraduate course in fluid mechanics

Course Description

In this course you will study the impact of aerodynamics on the design of motor vehicles. You will study the analytical, experimental and computational techniques that are integrated within the motor vehicle design process. You will also learn to design and implement experimental and computational simulations to support vehicle development.

Please note that if you take this course for a bachelor honours program, your overall mark in this course will be one of the course marks that will be used to calculate the weighted average mark (WAM) that will determine your award level.

This applies to students who commence enrolment in a bachelor honours program from 1 January 2016 onwards. See the WAM information web page for more information.(http://www1.rmit.edu.au/browse;ID=eyj5c0mo77631 )

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours):

1.2.Conceptual understanding of the mathematics, numerical analysis, statistics, and computer and information sciences which underpin the engineering discipline.

1.3 In-depth understanding of specialist bodies of knowledge within the engineering discipline

1.4.Knowledge of contextual factors impacting the engineering discipline.

1.6. Understanding of the scope, principles, norms, accountabilities and bounds of contemporary engineering practice in the specific discipline.

2.1. Application of established engineering methods to complex engineering problem solving.

2.2. Application of engineering techniques, tools and resources.

3.1. Ethical conduct and professional accountability

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

On completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Design and implement experimental testing and computational simulations relevant to new vehicle development,
  2. Analyse data from experimental and computational studies and interpret these in the context of vehicle design.

Overview of Learning Activities

Lectorials, tutorials, assignment. The lectorials use a problem-based approach to understanding the concepts. Tutorial time will enable you to work through the problems in the areas indicated in the specific educational objectives and weekly guide.

Overview of Learning Resources

Course-related resources will be provided on the course Canvas, which is accessed through myRMIT. This can include pre-recorded lecture videos, problem sheets and solutions, and references.
