Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Completion of first three years of a Bachelor of Engineering program.


Course Description

Final year students in Bachelor of Engineering Programs will work between 6 and 12 months in the relevant industry, gain work experience at a world-class international company and exposure to work ethic in different cultural settings. The students can develop their competencies for Professional Engineers by improving: 1) knowledge and skill base, 2) engineering application ability, 3) professional and personal attributes. 

Before you enrol in this course you must have a confirmed placement with an international host organisation that has been approved by the course coordinator. 

Note that securing a placement is competitive, based on both academic performance and a successful interview.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

On completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Acquire new knowledge and skills whenever necessary.
  2. Apply engineering knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to professional engineering work.
  3. Effectively work in teams as leader or member.
  4. Effectively communicate across all modes: listen, speak, write and draw.
  5. Conduct yourself in a professional and ethical manner.


This course contributes to the development of the following competencies:

  1. Knowledge and Skill Base:

    o Knowledge of engineering design practice and contextual factors impacting the engineering discipline.
    o Understanding of the scope, principles, norms, accountabilities and bounds of sustainable engineering practice in the specific discipline.

    o Fluent application of engineering techniques, tools and resources.
    o Application of systematic approaches to the conduct and management of engineering projects.

Overview of Learning Activities

In this course you are required to:

  • Attend pre-departure briefings, if available,
  • Perform engineering work related to an engineering field that is appropriate to your field of study,
  • Be supervised by a qualified engineer (i.e. by a national or international professional engineering accreditation body),
  • Work over a duration of 6 to 12 months.

Overview of Assessment

The course involves three assessment tasks which are designed aligning with the expected outcomes of the course. Details of each assessment are given below. 

Assessment tasks

Assessment Task 1: Written Report
Weighting 40%
This assessment task supports CLOs 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5

Assessment Task 2: Oral Presentation
Weighting 30%
This assessment task supports CLO 4

Assessment 3: Reflective journal
Weighting 30%
This assessment supports CLOs 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5

Detailed project briefs will be provided for each assessment task through Canvas. In addition, detailed rubrics will be provided for each assessment task outlining the expected outputs to achieve different grades. Late submissions will be penalised at 10% per working day unless extensions are authorised in writing.
