Course Description

This course will introduce you to the notion of an alteration to mental health. Various theoretical constructs related to mental health are examined. Human development and theories of developmental stages. Presentation, assessment, diagnosis, treatment and continuing care for a range of common mental health conditions are considered. You will develop an awareness of care requirements for patients with an alteration to their mental health to support your clinical practicum experience. Mental health care delivery systems will be investigated and you will consider the legislative protections for the mentally ill person within contemporary Australian society.

On successful completion of this course, you should be able to:

  1. Describe the contemporary issues faced by people with mental illness.
  2. Review the treatment options for the person with mental illness.
  3. Outline the protections in law for the person suffering a mental illness.
  4. Discuss the assessment and diagnosis of common mental illnesses within particular age groups.
  5. Review contemporary theories of human development as they relate to nursing practice and mental illness
  6. Differentiate the systems of care delivery for person with mental illness.


Overview of Learning Activities

This course will use a range of learning activities including lectures, face to face tutorials and self-directed learning. Throughout the course you will be able to work both independently and in groups to aid development of your theoretical knowledge and its application to mental illness knowledge and practice.

Learning activities will be varied and may include modalities such as recorded lectures, tutorials, and electronic discussion board.

Lectures: Recorded lectures and lecture notes are the principal mode of information delivery. You will consider key concepts and information relevant to the understanding of mental illness and nursing practice. You will be expected to participate in classroom discussions and to contribute to the learning experiences of your peers.

Independent Learning: You are expected to undertake independent learning activities to develop and consolidate knowledge throughout this learning experience. The activities associated with this course are designed to enable you to better develop independent learning skills to support your commitment to lifelong learning as a nursing professional and a university graduate. Independent learning activities will support your knowledge of the material covered in the formal learning program and enhance the consolidation and application of that knowledge.

RMIT have state of the art simulated learning facilities for student learning and practice. You will participate in simulated practice within these facilities in preparation for placement. As a part of participation you may be filmed for learning, teaching, reflection and assessment and this is considered an inherent part of our learning and teaching program. Recordings will be maintained in accordance with our assessment, document retention and privacy policies.
