Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

The assumed knowledge for this course is that student understand the fundamentals of material science

Course Description

This course presents the basic principles and construction practices for a range of types of construction in civil engineering. Techniques for temporary works and application of major construction materials are presented as well as construction techniques for permanent works.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for BH077 Bachelor of Engineering (Civil and Infrastructure) (Honours):

1.1. Comprehensive, theory based understanding of the underpinning natural and physical and the engineering fundamentals applicable to the engineering discipline.
1.3. In-depth understanding of specialist bodies of knowledge within the engineering discipline.
1.6. Understanding of the scope, principles, norms, accountabilities and bounds of contemporary engineering practice in the specific discipline
2.2. Fluent application of engineering techniques, tools and resources.
2.4. Application of systematic approaches to the conduct and management of engineering projects.

On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

1: Describe and explain the basic properties of common construction materials, concrete, steel and reinforced concrete. Understand and explain the concept of mix design for concrete and calculate mix quantities from a mix design and make concrete. Understand and explain the concept of concrete quality and determine the characteristic strength of concrete.

2: Be able to explain the methodology required and to undertake a concrete mix. To be able to explain and undertake standard tests required to ensure the quality of the concrete produced.

3: Describe and explain the key principles, practices and techniques and equipment used in construction in connection with open excavations and trenching, pumping, slope stabilization, ground support, use of drilling and explosives, tunnelling, cofferdams and caissons, pile driving, formwork, steel construction, ground stabilisation and earthmoving.

4: Be able to identify bridge types and understand the basic concepts behind bridge construction and the properties of each bridge type. Be able to select the most appropriate bridge for a given situation.

Overview of Learning Activities

Learning activities are designed to prepare you as a work-ready graduate (able to effectively work in teams, communicate and continue to learn as an adult). Adult learning is characterised by accepting responsibility for your own learning and by actively participating in the learning process (as both individuals and as contributors to teams). This course will provide you with the opportunity to develop as an adult learner via class lectures and tutorials, examples and practical problems, laboratory work and references for independent learning.

Total study hours: Total of 40 hours face to face teaching per semester (lectures, tutorials, laboratory work). Students are expected to undertake a minimum 4-5 hours of independent study per week, which includes reading from recommended texts.

Overview of Learning Resources

Learning resources will include;

  • Lecture notes
  • Tutorial questions
  • Lab Manuals
  • Reading material on Blackboard
  • Recommended texts

Support can also be found at the RMIT Subject Guide for Civil Engineeringhttp://rmit.libguides.com/civileng

Overview of Assessment

Assessment will be based on both individual and collaborative performance of requisite laboratory tasks and their subsequent write-up
