Course Description

In this course you will explore the critical theory and creative practice of communication design for social change, examining how social change is a significant driver in the professional practice of communication design. Through adventurous interdisciplinary design projects, you will develop a range of strategies to facilitate and communicate social change initiatives and reflect on the social & environmental responsibilities of ethical communication design practice.

Course Learning Outcomes 

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:  

  1. Design communications about social issues which have the potential to create social change 
  2. Apply creative and interdisciplinary collaboration skills & strategies 
  3. Critically discuss design’s potential for social change 
  4. Identify and apply a range of social design methods to inform social change strategies 
  5. Develop and apply a personal framework for practising communication design for social change 


Overview of Learning Activities

The course involves a range of activities including lectures, tutorials, group class discussion, group activities, peer review and individual research. You will be involved in activities requiring you to reflect, make decisions, reach agreements and document your design process as well as to articulate, negotiate and achieve your objectives within an ethical framework and professional practice.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. 

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task 1: Presentation (20%), CLOs 1 & 4
Assessment Task 2: Mapping (30%), CLOs 2, 3 & 4
Assessment Task 3: Social Design Project (50%), CLOs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
