Course Description

You will engage in learning about the impact of modern lifestyle factors on health so that you can make informed decisions on how to change your current lifestyle, and improve your health and productivity in the future.

The course will explore five dimensions of wellness, including emotional, social, intellectual, spiritual, and physical, with the major focus being on physical health. The content will have immediate personal relevance, as you will be asked to critically examine your own lifestyle and propose alternative(s} which can be made to enhance your health status and quality of life.

Cross professional, gender and cultural understanding and philosophical enquiry will be encouraged through on-line discussions. You will be expected to complete some practical activities as part of the course to reinforce concepts learnt.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the development of the following Health & Physical Education Program Learning Outcomes:

  • Develop content knowledge and how to teach it (PLO 2)

 


Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:

  1. Assess the health status of the Australian population, and the contribution of various determinants of health.
  2. Critically appraise your health behaviours and lifestyle.
  3. Describe behaviour theories and apply these to initiate, develop and implement strategies to improve your current health and wellness practises.
  4. Evaluate the importance of physical activity in improving/sustaining good health and design/implement your own physical activity and healthy lifestyle program.
  5. Understand the role of nutrition in health and wellness.
  6. Understand emotional wellness, with an emphasis on the role stress plays on health and wellbeing, including how to manage stress. 
  7. Apply concepts of intellectual, social and spiritual wellness to improve quality of life.
  8. Apply concepts of lifestyle modification at different stages of life and/or within various cultural and/or international contexts.


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both. 

You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course
