Course Description

 This course is an introduction to the technical and design processes required to produce knitted textile samples and products.

 During the course you will investigate emerging and ongoing design trends and will explore concepts through theme, material selection and technical processes.

You will investigate a range of knitting techniques and design principles, such as the use of colour, materials, hand and machine knitting and embellishments in order to produce original knitted textile outcomes in response to your research.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • Examine, analyse and evaluate theoretical and practical principles, emerging trends and issues pertinent to textile design and related industries
  • Demonstrate technical and creative skills, critical thinking when identifying and solving problems in diverse contexts for textile, fashion and other design contexts
  • Examine and apply ethical and sustainability principles to textile design practice in both local and global contexts


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Investigate, analyse and evaluate reference materials to inform your knitted textile design process.
  • Develop your skills and experiment in the use of hand and machine knit techniques for the creation of design outcomes
  • Develop and apply design skills specific to knitted textiles, through the use of colour, materials and techniques.
  • Communicate textile design concepts and ideas through the appropriate selection and use of digital presentation tools.


Overview of Learning Activities

This course will take a blended approach in its delivery. Key concepts and their application will be explained and illustrated in lectures / demonstrations / hands on workshops, class based activities or online notes / tutorials.  There will be opportunities to discuss the brief and requirements during individual and group tutorials.


Overview of Learning Resources

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.  This course has been developed in reference to the BATD assessment guide available through BP121 Mystudies – Canvas.   Please refer to the guide in order to familiarise yourself with program assessment methods. At the beginning of each project you will receive a copy of the: brief, teaching schedule and assessment rubric. The rubric should be consulted regularly, as it allows you to self assess and manage your progress. It will be used by your course lecturer/s to assess your project work upon completion.     Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.   If you have a long term medical condition and/or disability it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods.
